Chinese cups without handles were very popular in      
Europe and were imported in great quantities, usually  
packed in tea or rice. As shown in the painting, it    
was quite all right to pour the tea into the saucer for

A Chinese Blanc-de-Chine cup without handle,           
K'ang-hsi period, and a Meissen cup of 1715.           
Johann Friedrich Boettger's models were Blanc-         
de-Chine porcelain, but the straight Chinese original  
became a chocolate cup with lid and baroque handle.
