Palkhorchoede Monastery in Gyantse, on the route       
from Kathmandu to Lhasa. The monastery and the         
"Stupa of the Thousand Buddhas" are surrounded by a    
fortress-like wall. The windowless tower on the hill-  
top is used to hang up tangkas (buddhist paintings).

lies, like the monastery, far from any other settlement
in one of Tibet's high valleys. It is decorated        
with bushes festooned with the traditional prayer
