Thebes, 18th dynasty, around 1350 BCE. Guests are dressed
in festive clothing of the period. The women wear heavy wigs and cones of scented fat. They sniff the lotus flower and the round mandrake fruit. The scene hints subtly at rebirth and new life. Detail Upper register) of /51 EA,37984

Part of a silk panel, Coptic Egypt, early 8th century. Two scenes, one a mirror image of the other, depict a mounted emperor carrying a sceptre. They are separated by a column of balloon-like blossoms. The emperor's rearing horse rides over a soldier with a spear. A sense of landscape is created with plant forms, a long-legged water bird and a bird wearing a scarf. A woven inscription above reads Zachariou, possibly identifying the owner of the textile workshop as a Zacharias or Zachariah. The section above the inscriptions has a pattern of abstract blossoms on curvilinear stems with leafy sprigs. Strips of chandelier shaped leaves form borders down the sides. The silk is woven with purple and white threads in a weft-faced compound twill. It is probably from Akhmîm in Upper Egypt where a large number of textiles were found in graves in the late nineteenth century.

The "ram in a thicket" from Ur,southern Iraq, is one of an almost identical pair discovered by Leonard Woolley in the "Great Death Pit", one of the Royal Graves in the cemetery at
Ur. The "ram" is rather a goat and he reaches up for the tastiest branches. The goat's head and legs are covered in gold leaf, its ears are copper, its twisted horns and the fleece on its back are of lapis lazuli, the body fleece is made of shell. Its genitals are gold. The tree is covered in gold leaf,
with golden flowers. See also 08-02-01/1. ANE 122200

Footed basin, decorated with leaves and lotus flowers, Ottoman, c1545-c1550. This large basin may have been used for washing the feet of Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent. An inventory of the Ottoman treasury in 1505 makes mention of 'foot basins': this may either mean that they were indeed used for washing feet, or that the basins were mounted upon a circular foot, as here. The basin is an example of the 'Damascus' style of Iznik pottery. The outside of the broad bowl is painted in a lively pattern of large cobalt blue and turquoise lotus-flowers, enclosed by slender blue stems and long feathery green leaves. A smaller version of the same design appears around the foot, bordered by narrow bands of cable pattern. Inside the basin is a radial arrangement of medallions containing cloud scrolls, each medallion surrounded by tall stalks of bluebells.
