When foundation work for the Paris Opera was begun in 1861, the level of groundwater was unexpectedly high. Architect Charles Garnier had to design a double foundation to protect the superstructure from moisture. His construction consists of a water course and an enormous concrete cistern which was also meant as a water reservoir in case of fire. Today the "lake" is part of the modern ventilation system.
