The Soviet tanks were at first ordered to make a "show of force" by driving through the streets of Budapest, but were allowed to fire in self-defense only. Insurgents threw Molotov cocktails from upper floors and tried to slow down the Soviet tanks by building makeshift barricades made from upturned vehicles or cobblestones.
