Two vinegar-and-oil sets, left Chinese K'ang-hsi,
right Meissen. In a few years, Meissen perfected
the blue under-glaze painting, the cobalt no longer
ran under the glaze as it did in earlier pieces.
Height left 20.1 cm, right 19 cm (1725-1730)

Meissen vase with Chinese design. King August the
Strong had a large collection of Chinese porcelain
which he imported at great cost. What he wished his
Meissen Manufacture to produce therefore, were his
favourite blue under-glaze designs (1723).

Chinese children, as a Meissen vase-painter saw them.
The Meissen painters knew China second-hand only,
mostly from Chinese porcelain, painted in China
to please European customers. This detail comes from
the largest Meissen vase of the 18th, 77.5 cm high.

Two large vases, left real Chinese K'ang-hsi, right
Meissen. The Meissen imitation is from 1722 or 23,
and the Saxon painters had not yet completely mastered
the technique of under-glaze painting. The blue decor
is less firm and intense than in the Chinese model.

A bathing scene on a small, pear-shaped Meissen vase.
A rare piece because of its twofold technique: the
blue has been painted under the glaze, the coquettish
bathing scene put on afterwards over the glaze.
