"O the Roast Beef of England", 1749. An overweight monk and a cook carrying a huge slab of beef, in direct contrast are the French soldiers behind them. The tall soldier is so distracted he is spilling his soup. Through the arch figures kneel as a priest walks by. The scene takes place in front of the inner drawbridge of the Gate of Calais. A Frost Fair on the Thames at Temple Stairs, 1684.

In periods when the British climate was more severe than it is now the River Thames sometimes froze over in the winter. A number of fairs, known as the River Thames frost fairs were held on the river. The great freeze of 1683-4 was the longest in London's history. The diarist John Evelyn recorded that "Streets of Boothes were set upon the Thames... all sorts of Trades and shops furnished, and full of Commodities...".
