with a rare design of wide ribbons of flowers. On the
white fields, birds of prey alternate with "Indian

Two coffee pots with the popular, blue onion design.
Although Meissen manufactured great, solemn, and
over-decorated pieces for the King's, the owner's,
pleasure and private use, the factory soon began
turning out china for bourgeois households. 1730-1740

Meissen vase with Chinese design. King August the
Strong had a large collection of Chinese porcelain
which he imported at great cost. What he wished his
Meissen Manufacture to produce therefore, were his
favourite blue under-glaze designs (1723).

Chinese children, as a Meissen vase-painter saw them.
The Meissen painters knew China second-hand only,
mostly from Chinese porcelain, painted in China
to please European customers. This detail comes from
the largest Meissen vase of the 18th, 77.5 cm high.

Two large vases, left real Chinese K'ang-hsi, right
Meissen. The Meissen imitation is from 1722 or 23,
and the Saxon painters had not yet completely mastered
the technique of under-glaze painting. The blue decor
is less firm and intense than in the Chinese model.

A bathing scene on a small, pear-shaped Meissen vase.
A rare piece because of its twofold technique: the
blue has been painted under the glaze, the coquettish
bathing scene put on afterwards over the glaze.

Chinese cups without handles were very popular in
Europe and were imported in great quantities, usually
packed in tea or rice. As shown in the painting, it
was quite all right to pour the tea into the saucer for
cooling. 6 K'ang-hsi cups and saucers, 1662-1722
