Jade rhyton, Chinese, Qing dynasty, 18th-19th century. This cup takes the traditional form of a hornshaped rhyton. It stands vertically on a flat, narrow base, widening to an uneven lip. An inscription is carved around the inside of the lip. The outside surface is carved with wave-like scrolls, where sea-creatures frolic carved in bold relief. The lower half of the cup is held in the mouth of a fish or dragon, whose tail twists along the side of the cup.

Clay jar with red-fired decoration, from Ban Chiang, north-eastern Thailand, 1st millennium BC. Neolithic cultures based on agriculture and the use of stone tools appeared throughout mainland South-east Asia between 4000 BC and 1000 BC. Bronze technology became widespread in the northern part during the second millennium BC and iron after 500 BC. Elaborately decorated pots such as this one were produced in the first millennium BC. A great variety of decorative motifs feature on this pottery including the red spiral patterns that densely cover the surface of this pot. These are similar to those found on contemporary pottery in southern China.
