The archangel Gabriel, from "The Wonders of Creation and the Oddities of Existence", around 1375-1425. Gabriel is an important figure to Muslims as well as to Christians. In Islam, Gabriel acts as God's messenger to the Prophet Mohammed on his Night Journey bringing him from Mecca to Jerusalem through Hell and Heaven and finally to the throne of God. "The Wonders of Creation" was compiled by Zakaria Qazwini, a judge living in Wasit,Iraq.          1963.4-20.01

The prophet Elijah rescuing Hamza's nephew, Prince Nur ad-Dahr. Scene from the "Hamzamana" (Book of Hamza) a heroic romance about the legendary adventures of the prophet Mohammed's uncle, Amir Hamza. The young Moghul emperor Akbar enjoyed listening to the tales of the "Hamzanama" and in 1562 commissioned an illustrated version, which had fourteen volumes, each volume with one hundred paintings. Approximately one hundred of these paintings survive today. OA 1925.9-29.01

The crow addresses the animals, an illustration to an animal fable, around 1600. A throng of creatures from earth, sea and air gathers around the crow, perched on the peak of a rock. Animal fables were a traditional entertainment to teach the princes the elements of wise statecraft. The Moghul emperor Akbar was particularly fond of them and ordered an illustrated copy of one such collection called Anvar-i-Suhalyi", Lights of Canopus.
