The Petöfi Cercle, after two moves to ever larger rooms, finally met in the hall of Budapest's Officers' Club on June 27, 1956. 600 people were expected, 7.000 came to listen to discussions of the government's press- and information policy. The meeting was transmitted by loudspeaker to the thousands waiting outside.

The Petöfi Cercle was a discussion forum of the Communist Youth League (DISZ). Named after the hero-poet Sandor Petöfi , the poet of the Revolution of 1848, it attracted
intellectuals critical of the Communist party-line. 
The meeting of June 27,1956, on the government's press- and information policy, took place at the Budapest Officers' Club. Tibor Tardos, well-known columnist expelled from the Communist Party the previous year, addressed the Cercle.
