windmill of Valmy, on Sept. 20, 1792, ended without a
decisive victory, but the French under Generals Dumouriez and Kellermann impressed the allied interventionist armies under the Duke of Braunschweig. Goethe,who accompanied the regiments from Weimar, told the officers and men around him :"From this day forth begins a new era in the history of the world  and you can all say that you were present at its birth"
