Archangel ivory panel, around 525-550 CE. An archangel is poised at the top of a flight of stairs, holding a staff in his left hand and an orb in his right, surmounted by a jewelled cross. His wings and body overlap fluted columns with composite capitals and an arch richly decorated with acanthus leaves.
Probably carved in Constantinopel and associated with the
accession of Justinian I in 527 CE. M&ME, OA 9999

The Lothar, or Susanna Crystal, c855-c869. The rock crystal is engraved with scenes of the story of Susanna as recorded in the Apocrypha. Each scene is accompanied by an inscription drawn from the Vulgate. In the first four scenes Susanna is shown accosted by the elders, falsely accused and convicted of adultery. The last scenes show the elders being questioned by Daniel, condemned for false witness and executed. The final scene shows Susanna declared innocent. The figures are executed in the energetic figural style known as the Rheims style which derived from manuscript drawings such as the Utrecht Psalter. According to an inscription engraved on the crystal it was engraved for Lothar, 'King of the Franks', most probably Lothar II of Lotharingia (AD 855-69).The crystal is framed in a fifteenth-century gilded copper frame.

The Tring Tiles, Medieval, c1325. Set of outstanding tiles with images drawn from apocryphal legends from the 'unofficial' life of Christ. Most contain two scenes, and can be read like a comic strip, although missing scenes disturb the continuity of the stories; a tile showing the reaping of corn miraculously multiplied to a vast amount is combined with an unconnected incident. Other tiles concentrate on the charity and wisdom of Jesus. They probably decorated a wall rather than a floor, and the sgraffito design may indicate that they were produced at Tring in Hertfordshire where this technique was popular on pottery.

Porcelain ice-pail, French, 1811. This porcelain ice-pail, with its elephant heads, formed part of a gift made on 5 May 1812 to the Emperor Francis I of Austria from his son-in-law Napoleon I. In a small composition by Jean-François Robert, Napoleon himself, with the Empress Marie-Louise, can be seen in the landau carriage in front of the Château of Saint-Cloud.The pail originally had metal liners intended to hold ice-cream, surrounded by crushed ice. The elephant heads suggest something of a Rococo fantasy, but the gilt ground and patterns of matt gilded decoration are firmly in the Empire style, reflecting the splendour and luxury of the Napoleonic court.
