Portrait of Pharaoh Tutankhamun (1346-1337 BCE).
This marvellous, life size mask, of excellent workmanship, protected the head of Tutankhamon's mummy. His shoulders and the back of his mask are inscribed with a magic formula that ensures protection. The golden nemes headdress is striped in blue and green while the uraeus and vulture head, in gold inlaid with semi-precious stones and coloured glass, ornament the brow. The mask's eyes are made of obsidian and quartz with a touch of red at the corners. The divine beard, is made of cloisonne work. The ears are pierced for the wearing of earrings. The wide necklace collar is formed of rows of lapis lazuli, quartz, amazonite and coloured glass beads attached at each shoulder to a gold falcon's head ornamented with obsidian.

Book of the Dead: The papyrus of Hunefer.
Above Hunefer kneeling before a table of offerings in adoration, in presence of fourteen gods, seated in order of judges. Below the Judgement, or weighing of the conscience; the jakal-headed Anubis examines the pointer of the balance, wherein the heart (conscience) of the deceased is being weighed against the feather of Maat, symbolical of law or of right and truth; on the left a jakal-headed deity is leading the deceased by the left hand. On the right are the monster Ammut, the Devourer, and the Ibis-headed God Thoth, the scibe of the Gods, who notes down the result of the trial. On the right Hunefer is ushered by Horus into the presence of the God Osiris enthroned within a shrine. Behind him are Isis and Nephtys. In front a lotus flower on which stand the four children of Horus, or gods of the cardinal points.

Statue of a bearded man, Early Dynastic period, 2.600-2,500 BCE. This broken statue was probably deposited in a temple as a votive offering. Figures of men and women were set up in temples in ancient Mesopotamia to symbolically represent their donor in prayer before a god.

Statue of Nofret wearing a wig and bead necklace (detail).
Painted limestone statue from Meidum, Egypt; 2620 BCE,
Old Kingdom (4th dynasty); height: 1,18m

She was part of the royal entourage of Pharaoh Snofru, King of the 4th dynasty, and held the title "one known to the king". Her husband was Prince Rahotep, who was High Priest of Re at Heliopolis, Director of Expeditions and Chief of Construction. The quality and beauty of this marvellously preserved seated statue of Nofret, along with a statue of Rahotep in the same style, found in 1871 in their brick mastaba at Meidum, confirms her high rank. It is not unlikely that it was created by highly skilled sculptors working for the royal ateliers. The face of the statue expresses the same solemness and self-assuredness as the royal statues of the same dynasty. The realism in this statue is increased by the glass inlaid eyes and its realistic size.

The Doctor. Wodden statue from Saqqara, Egypt. Old Kingdom (5th dynasty).

The Royal Scribe.
Painted limestone sculpture; Saqqara, Egypt.
Old Kingdom , 5th Dynasty.

This statue presents the ideal image of a perfect official. The position of scribe was one of the most honoured in ancient Egypt, therefore many tomb owners from the time of Khufu (4th Dynasty) onwards to the Late Period, had themselves represented in the squatting scribal attitude, reading or writing. The face of this anonymous scribe is emphasized by a slight asymmetry and by the style of the wig, the locks of which are thrown back over the shoulders leaving the face free.
