Archangel ivory panel, around 525-550 CE. An archangel is poised at the top of a flight of stairs,holding a staff in his left hand and an orb in his right, surmounted by a jewelled cross. His wings and body overlap fluted columns with composite capitals and an arch richly decorated with acanthus leaves. Probably carved in Constantinopel and associated with the accession of Justinian I in 527 CE. M&ME, OA 9999

0310000102 Portable altar, Medieval, from Germany, c1200. Portable altar engraved with the four symbols of the Evangelists and Saints Peter, Andrew, Stephen and Lawrence. Above the altar-stone, (likely to be a variety of Purbeck marble), there is an ivory of the Crucifixion and below it the Virgin and Child enthroned with two bishop saints. To either side is a miniature under crystal, of Saints Godehard (right) and Bernard (left), both bishops of Hildesheim. Beneath the ivory of the Virgin and Child is an inscription 'THIDERICVS. ABBAS. III. DEDIT', which reveals the identity of the patron as Theodoric, the third abbot of his name, possibly Abbot Theodoric who was abbot at Godehardiklosters, Hildesheim, Germany. Porcelain ice-pail, French, 1811. This porcelain ice-pail, with its elephant heads, formed part of a gift made on 5 May 1812 to the Emperor Francis I of Austria from his son-in-law Napoleon I. In a small composition by Jean-François Robert, Napoleon himself, with the Empress Marie-Louise, can be seen in the landau carriage in front of the Château of Saint-Cloud.The pail originally had metal liners intended to hold ice-cream, surrounded by crushed ice. The elephant heads suggest something of a Rococo fantasy, but the gilt ground and patterns of matt gilded decoration are firmly in the Empire style, reflecting the splendour and luxury of the Napoleonic court.
