Avalokiteshvara found in Dunhuang Caves, China; 910 CE.
The central figure of Avalokiteshvara has his usual attribute of Buddha Amitabha on his head-dress. He stands upon a floating lotus, holds a willow spray in his left hand and a flask in his right. An inscription on the back of the painting identifies the shaven-headed figure as the Very  Reverend nun Yanhui, the young man on the right is the probationary chamberlain Zhang Youcheng. Painted wooden panel showing riders with bowls into which birds dive, from Dandan-oilik, Khotan oasis, Xinjiang province, China, 6th CE.Before the advent of Islam in the 8th century, Khotan was a thriving kingdom along the Southern Silk Route. Dandan-oilik was a Buddhist sanctuary there and became Sir Aurel Stein's first excavation site in the Desert of Taklamakan. The panels are the best surviving evidence of the legendary Khotanese school of painting.

Depicted patrolling his domain with heavenly troops; he holds a golden halberd in his right hand; his sister Shri Devi, Goddess of Material Blessings, precedes him. She holds a golden dish with flowers. The Garuda in flight represents the dark forces against which Vaishravana offers protection. Painting on silk.                        OA 1919.1-1.045
