0310000104 Monumental brass of an unknown bishop, Medieval, c1375-c1400. Fragment of a monumental brass with the head of an unknown bishop within an ornate architectural canopy. His mitre and the hook of his crosier are studded with jewels and depicted with great attention to detail. The crosier contains the Agnus Dei (the Lamb of God), the symbol of St John the Baptist, who may be the bishop's patron saint. Above the bishop, his soul is represented by a naked, mitred figure which is being received by Abraham in a length of cloth. To the left and right are angels with candles and the figures of St Peter (left), St Paul (right), and probably St John the Evangelist (far left) and another male saint with a sword, possibly St Matthew. The brass comes from Flanders, or possibly France. M&ME, 1853,2-21,1

Dome mosaic of the Baptism of Christ. Appropriate for a baptistery, the center of this dome mosaic shows Christ baptized by John the Baptist in the river Jordan. The personification of the river Jordan to the left of Christ recalls pagan personifications. Surrounding this central image are the twelfe Apostles. They are led by Peter and Paul who flank the etimasia, or "prepared throne", which awaits Christ's arrival as judge at the end of time.
