Punchinello carried off by a centaur, around 1797. Punchinello is being carried off on the back of a rearing centaur, pursued by a bare-footed woman in a head scarf, her face unseen and her arms waving wildly. The drawing mocks the classical scene in which a centaur carried off a woman and is pursued by a hero. PD, 1925-4-6-1

Study for the Phrygian Sibyl, 1511-1512. This drawing is a study for the Chigi chapel in Santa Maria della Pace in Rome. Over the chapel arch, Raphael painted in fresco the four Sibyls. The seated figure with classical drapery was probably painted from a male model, but the face is idealized, full of grace and beauty. PD, 1953-10-10-1

Calumny of Apelles, 1565. An allegory in which Truth triumphs over all her enemies. The subject is taken from a painting by the classical Greek artist Apelles. Latin titles explain the figures: Sitting on a throne to the right is a king with large ears. He stretches out his hand past two female figures labelled Ignorance and Suspicion, towards Slander. Slander holds a blazing torch and drags a young man who prays to heaven for the gods to witness his innocence. Treachery,Deceit and Envy follow suit, far behind come Penitence and Naked Truth. PD,1959-2-14-1
