Aigues-Mortes, a typical "bastide", or fortress-town, was built by Philippe le Hardi, son of French King Saint Louis. The French kings wished to make Aigues Mortes the predominant harbour of the Mediterranean, but underestimated the silting up of the area and Aigues-Mortes never became the important center of trade or meeting point for the crusaders.

The Chateau Gaillard was built by Richard the Lionhearted
who wished to prevent French King Philippe-August from entering Normandy. It was used as a prison; upon order of King Henri IV it was dismanteled in 1603 and has been a ruin since.
