Codex Borgia (around 1600; of Pre-Columbian Mexican origin).
The Codex Borgia is the most beautiful of the remaining preserved ancient Mexican hand painted manuscripts. A number of codices have been identified as to having similar traits as the Borgia. The majority of the contents of the Codex Borgia group is directed to calendrical matters. Additionally, rituals are also touched upon. Totally unique is the presentation of impressive temple rituals.
The group shows the religious world view, the fantasy and cults of the old priestly class, and their accumulated wisdom at its highest point of development. Also as an artistic achievment, the Borgia Group codices stand on a high level.

Alderwood gull mask from Canada, 18th century. Wooden mask decorated with flicker feathers; a rattle of small limpet shells inside which soounded when dancing in the winter ceremonial. Gulls herald plentiful food, since they announce the arrival of herring in the spring by shrieking and diving over fish shoals. Ethno, NWC 55

Snowshoe Dance at first snowfall. Ojibwa, 1835-37.
From "North American Indian Portfolio" by George Catlin
Hand-colored lithographs; London; 1844-48.
George Catlin was the first artist to observe the tribes of the Plains Indians and to illustrate their habits and customs from first-hand observation. His belief in the "noble savage", unspoiled by contact with the outside world, sustained him as he crossed and re-crossed the country - from the Mississippi to the Rockies - gathering raw material for his Indian Gallery.
