The Tring Tiles, Medieval, c1325. Set of outstanding tiles with images drawn from apocryphal legends from the 'unofficial' life of Christ. Most contain two scenes, and can be read like a comic strip, although missing scenes disturb the continuity of the stories; a tile showing the reaping of corn miraculously multiplied to a vast amount is combined with an unconnected incident. Other tiles concentrate on the charity and wisdom of Jesus. They probably decorated a wall rather than a floor, and the sgraffito design may indicate that they were produced at Tring in Hertfordshire where this technique was popular on pottery.

Portable altar, Medieval, from Germany, c1200. Portable altar engraved with the four symbols of the Evangelists and Saints Peter, Andrew, Stephen and Lawrence. Above the altar-stone, (likely to be a variety of Purbeck marble), there is an ivory of the Crucifixion and below it the Virgin and Child enthroned with two bishop saints. To either side is a miniature under crystal, of Saints Godehard (right) and Bernard (left), both bishops of Hildesheim. Beneath the ivory of the Virgin and Child is an inscription 'THIDERICVS. ABBAS. III. DEDIT', which reveals the identity of the patron as Theodoric, the third abbot of his name, possibly Abbot Theodoric who was abbot at Godehardiklosters, Hildesheim, Germany. In a cavity beneath are relics of saints.

Dome mosaic of the Baptism of Christ.
Appropriate for a baptistery, the center of this dome mosaic shows Christ baptized by John the Baptist in the river Jordan. The personification of the river Jordan to the left of Christ recalls pagan personifications. Surrounding this central image are the twelfe Apostles. They are led by Peter and Paul who flank the etimasia, or "prepared throne", which awaits Christ's arrival as judge at the end of time.
Around 500-25; Baptistery of the Arians (now Santa Maria in Cosmedin), Ravenna
