The crow addresses the animals, an illustration to an animal fable, around 1600. A throng of creatures from earth, sea and air gathers around the crow, perched on the peak of a rock. Animal fables were a traditional entertainment to teach the princes the elements of wise statecraft. The Moghul emperor Akbar was particularly fond of them and ordered an illustrated copy of one such collection called Anvar-i-Suhalyi", Lights of Canopus. OA 1920.9-17.05

Varaha with Bhu, Pahari region, North India, around 1740. The four armed Varaha is shown holding Vishnu's characteristic attributes, the discus, conch shell, a lotus and a club with which he strikes the sea-demon. Blood pours from the demon's chest and he staggers back, dropping his broken sword. Varaha lifts the earth balanced on is tusks, saving the earth goddes Bhu from the swirling black ocean. Silver dish, Sasanian, 3rd century. Figures were cut from a thin sheet of silver, embossed and then soldered to the surface of the dish. Scene is borrowed from the classical antique, with Dyonisos in his chariot, surrounded by revelers. ANE 124086

One of many late Sasanian bowls used in magical ceremonies to protect individuals and their relatives or possessions from evil spirits. Spells were writtin in a variety of scripts and occasionally the bound spirit or magicians were also depicted inside the vessel. The abstract figure in the centre of this bowl may be a demon, the inscription is in Aramaic. ANE 91725

Plate with dog-headed bird, Sasanian, 7th century. Gilded silver dish showing a legendary dog-headed bird known as "senmurw". It appears in the Late Sasanian period of the 6th century in embroidered roundels on textiles. Sometimes it sits on the tree of life and, by beating its wings, scatters the seeds across the earth. In 637 the Sasanians were defeated by an Arab army. ANE 124095
