Two jade bases for huqqa pipes. The main body of each bowl is green jade,encrusted with darker green jade. lapis lazuli and rubies. The bowls sit in tall three-footed mounts, made of green marble and ormulu. The were produced by a French artist in London, fleeing the French Revolution. A young man visits a dervich. The topic of the visit to the hermit was often exploited by Iranian and Indian artists. Several Persan poems put in contrast the character of the prince and that of the hermit. This painting is a page of an album and one does not know if it acts as an insulated piece of work or as a page taken from a manuscript. It can be put in connection with one of the episodes of the poem of Helali, the King and the dervish, composed about 1505, which tells the story of the friendship between a young prince and an ascetic.
