Willem Barents (ca. 1550-1597, Dutch name Barentsz) was a Dutch navigator and explorer, leader of early expeditions in far northern waters. He made three expeditions to seek the Northeast Passage; he died on the last voyage. The Barents Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean north of Norway, is named after him.
